A native of Jersey City, NJ, Willie Banks began his 1997 campaign as a non-roster invitee to the Yankees spring training camp. Re-assigned to the Columbus Clippers on March 20, Banks compiled a 14-5 record with a 4.27 ERA in 33 games (24 starts). His impressive season led to a promotion on September 9.
The 28-year-old righty wasted no time as he entered the game that night in relief of Dwight Gooden and posted his first Major League victory in three years in an 8-6 come from behind win in Boston.
Banks ended the '97 season with a record of 3-0 and a 1.93 ERA.
"I've been wanting to be a Yankee since I was six years old," Banks said. "It's been a long time coming. I'm just glad I could make the best of it."
Look for Banks to continue his great pitching in the Bronx in 1998.
